Furniture

Someone warned us to be careful when buying sheets because the beds in the States tend to be longer that the ones in Europe. I bet my mom, the worrywart she is, meticulously scoured all the stores to find the longest sheets, and when she finally did, she bought three sets. In the month prior to my departure, she would often fret whether they will fit. The first night at college, I put the sheets on my bed only to discover that my mom’s fears were not justified at all. However, my happiness was short-lived: they were not wide enough!

  1. LOL, I love this piece. LOL. I was not expecting “not wide enough”. It is very funny and suprising! I like how you started with “someone warned us” to give the reader some hint about where you are heading.

  2. Aneliya, I love this entry. Perhaps because I had the opposite experience: I had to convince my Mom that yes, I needed new sheets. She did not believe me; she thought that our normal sheets would work. I insisted that essentially all American colleges are now required to provide twin extra long mattresses for their students. Luckily I convinced her a few days before college and we made a Bed Bath & Beyond run.

I love the last sentence—it completely shifts the piece from your Mom to you.
